An octothorpe is simply this symbol (#).
In the United States of America, the symbol is traditionally called the pound sign.
It goes by many other names around the world which include comment sign, crosshatch, crunch, hash / hash mark / hash sign, mesh, pig pen, splat, tic-tac-toe, widget mark, plus many more.
